Wellness Week in the Sun – the Active Retreat

We’ve all got a different idea of the perfect holiday – for a lot of people, their ideal holiday is a wellness week in the sun. It’s a far cry from the old style ‘drop and flop’ holiday, where you don’t move from a sun lounger for a week, apart from when you head to the bar for another drink or portion of chips, but it’s a lot better for you!

Wellness weeks have risen in popularity as our daily lives have become more and more stressful. With round the click emails, longer working hours, less social time, disturbed sleep patterns and the like, the idea of spending a stress-free week in the sunshine has become more and more appealing to people looking to get themselves off the treadmill of life for a short time.

What is a wellness week in the sun?

Essentially it’s a holiday where you look after yourself properly. You do some exercise, which obviously improves both your physical and mental health. You rest a lot – you can sleep, lie on a beach, swing in a hammock and generally give your brain and your body a break. You eat great food – we feed you vitamin and mineral-rich foods, with meals being cooked fresh every day. There’s no microwave meals or re-heated garbage on the Active Retreat!

You also get a chance to mix with like-minded people. The typical guest on the active retreat is a busy person who perhaps hasn’t had the time to look after themselves properly and wants a break. They want to go on holiday, have someone else take care of everything for them, enjoy new experiences, meet new people and generally give their body a chance to rest and recover fully.

It’s our aim that when you have a wellness week on the Active Retreat, you leave us feeling physically and mentally refreshed. It’s a stress free way to give your body a break.

What’s the difference between a wellness week and a bootcamp?

On the Active Retreat, there’s no pressure. Our activities are varied, they’re fun and they’re designed to give you a mixture of challenges and experiences. We do circuit training, yoga, surfing, HIIT, cycling, hiking, kayaking etc, so you experience all kinds of different fitness work. We encourage you to take part in them all, but if you don’t fancy doing something, we don’t make you. We’re not going to beat down your door if you miss a class for example – it’s your choice!

On a bootcamp it’s the opposite – the fitness work is more like traditional exercise and it’s a much more ‘aggressive’ approach to training. You’ll be pushed hard, you’ll be made to keep working, you won’t get the same rest etc. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing by the way – some people need that. It’s just not what we do on the Active Retreat!

Don’t get me wrong, we do some TOUGH workouts on the Active Retreat, but we balance those out with some more gentle exercise classes as well – including three restorative yoga sessions in the week.

Can I still drink whilst on the Active Retreat?

Absolutely! We’re believers in the philosophy of exercise being a part of life, but it’s doesn’t have to take over your life. Removing all the fun wouldn’t be enjoyable for anyone – you’re on holiday after all. One of the great thing about where we are based in Fuerteventura is that within a 5 minute walk there are a few nice and relaxed bars, all with plenty of space to sit and enjoy a few drinks at the end of another great day in the sunshine!

True wellness is about mental health as well as physical health, which is why we really encourage fun on the retreat. As they say, laughter is the best medicine so if you’re highly stressed, missing out on fun and laughter, come to the Active Retreat and laugh every day!
