You know what I love about a fitness holiday in the sun? The sense of adventure – the fact that we make the world our gym. Don’t get me wrong, I love the gym environment (I should – I spend a lot of time in there!), but there’s something about a fitness holiday in the sun that you just can’t replicate inside.
On the Active Retreat we make the world our gym. We do dune sprints, we surf, we do yoga outdoors, we do outdoor circuit training, we cycle, we hike – we make sure that we’re the opposite of what you do at home. You don’t come on a fitness holiday in the sun to work out in a gym or spend the entire time inside. The additional vitamin D, the fresh air, the sunshine, the extra room and the feeling of being in nature is impossible to replicate elsewhere.
With the nature of Fuerteventura being as it is, we’d be fools to not take advantage of the terrain that surrounds us. Golden sand dunes for doing HIIT workouts on, the most crystal clear, warm ocean for surfing and doing stand up paddle boarding in, empty roads and fantastic off-road tracks for cycling along and a villa with an area perfect for doing circuit training and yoga outdoors. Imagine doing your yoga here as the sun goes down on another adventure-filled day…
The outdoor element is a huge part of what we do on the Active Retreat – it’s part of the reason we picked Fuerteventura to host our fitness holiday. The weather is fantastic all year round, so even if we head out there in December we’re almost certain to have amazing weather and go home tanned and rejuvenated.
A fitness holiday in the sun means that you have options for what you do throughout your time with us. The exercise is outdoors, but beyond that we have our downtime – this is usually spent on the beach because of the sunshine. If you don’t fancy the beach there’s the gardens at the villa, there’s the local village of Lajares or you could explore Corralejo, the biggest local town (which is still very small by UK standards!)
Sunshine and Fitness Holidays
A holiday is all about feeling good, enjoying the weather, eating great food and resting properly. Although a fitness holiday in the sun might not sound like you’re doing much in the way of relaxing, I can promise you that’s the case. Our fitness timetable is balanced so you still get plenty of downtime and don’t feel exhausted from the training. Some of our workouts are incredibly tough (the dine of doom HIIT sprints being one of the tougher ones), but you’re rewarded with the rest of there day off afterwards!
If we have a tough workout in the morning, it’s very easy in the evening. If the morning is easy, the evening is tougher. If there’s an afternoon activity (surfing etc) then we don’t do a morning class – instead we relax in the evening with a yoga class. Having run fitness holidays in the sun since 2016, we know how to timetable everything so they guests get a great mixture of exercise and recovery during their stay with us.
There’s no light pollution where we are, so you sleep DEEPLY! That helps with your resting and recovery. The sunshine is also a proven mood enhancer, so that makes you feel better. Being away from the stresses and strains of work and everyday life also make you feel better. In fact, you’d be pretty hard pressed to find a week on the Active Retreat stressful!
There’s nothing quite like going to bed in the night time having eaten great food, done some exercise, had a fantastic laugh with some really nice people and spent a day on one of the most beautiful beaches you’ll ever lie on. If only all days could be like that eh? On the Active Retreat, they are!
